Quicksand Update

Vince Hudd of Soft Rock software has updated his newly released Quicksand text adventure with the capabilty of playing on older versions of RISC OS amonst many other issues. Get your updates and the game itself from Soft Rock's website.

Here's what the author of the game, Vince Hudd said in his comment about the update on the RISC OS news website Drobe Launchpad: "I had a brain-botty-burp when I said 1MB VRAM is enough for the graphics; it actually needs 2MB VRAM to run at 800x600x16M - so I've changed it to default to 800x600x32K. Just download the qsand.zip for this update, and copy the contents over the existing !Quicksand installation with 'Newer' set.

If you do have 2MB VRAM, then there's a third small zip file, qsandh.zip - download that and copy its contents over !Quicksand to enable 16M colours.

Another change is to cause the cursor keys to generate the four direction commands, and the command 'where' - which tells the player the location number - is now entered via F2.

And finally some changes to the game script itself - there was a small 'feature' in the script, which didn't affect how the game was played, but just looked odd (if the player found it) and I've added a more obvious command to use when two particular objects have been found."

Quicksand

Quicksand is a new and free text adventure game for RISC OS computers, in which you play the role of Stan Tyler from Soft Rock Software.

You were in an accident, and you woke up dressed like some kind of 1970s throwback in what looks like some form of interactive fiction! What's going on? Are you in a coma? Have you gone mad? Or have you really been transformed into binary data?

The only way to find out is to play the game...

The game has been written using Trellis and is provided free of charge from this website. Any rumours that may claim this is because it's so simple are completely true - this game is so simple, it's stunningly simple! Can you fail to complete it in a fairly short timescale?

The game is, by default, text only and runs in MODE 15, so should work on any RISC OS computer with RISC OS 3.1 or higher.

If you have a RiscPC or later with 1 megabyte of video RAM, running RISC OS 3.5/SpriteExtend 0.99 or higher, then you can also download the graphics for the game; with the graphics installed it runs in a much higher resolution.

You can download this brand new game from Soft Rock's website
